Dry Scalp With Sores
14th-Jan-2009 12:41 pm
I know it sounds gross, but my scalp has been SO dry for a while now and I keep getting these pimple-like sores that hurt like hell and last about a week or more each. Do any of you get real dry scalp and/or sore and if so, what do you do for it?
I've tried Head & Shoulder dandruff shampoo and I always use the moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. NOTHING is helping! ARGH!

I use a LUSH shampoo for curly hair and then I use a Paul Mitchell scalp and hair conditioner with tea tree oil. I rub it into my scalp and leave it one for at least three minutes--longer if I can. Rinse very well and it helps a lot with my scalp. My skin is very very dry and very fragile. I drink tons of water, but it never helps. Also eating Brazil nuts or taking selenium should help too. Also Omega 3's and flax seed oil are supposed to help.

Could it be psoriasis? My husband has it on his scalp--he rubs his scalp with coconut oil before he goes to bed to moisturize. Maybe try that, or olive oil instead?

I have seborrheic dermatitis, which most people think is really bad dandruff caused by dry scalp, but is actually more complicated than that. The sores you describe sound familiar. My head itches like mad and if I don't stay on top of it my eyebrows shed. Seriously, ick.

Antifungal shampoos are suggested and are probably worth trying even if this doesn't sound like what you're dealing with. Personally, I use apple cider vinegar full strength to keep the ick down. It works relatively well. I put it on my face, too.

I have that too. I use a prescription shampoo twice a week and the Selsun Blue naturals dandruff shampoo (the kind with aloe and vitamin E I think...smells much nicer than the normal stuff!) the rest of the time. I'm a guy and have short hair and don't feel the need for gunking up my hair with conditioner (and don't feel it does much for conditioning the scalp anyway).

My face and arms got bad while I was taking Accutane. That stuff is EVIL.

I've heard great things about apple cider vinegar too- also, Nioxin's leave-in treatment helped a lot!

If your skin is dry, try iodine! I've been mixing 2-5 drops per day (starting off slowly) in milk for a year now & I can't tell you how much better I feel!

I am soooo glad you postted this, I am not being Funny, but I have a dog with the same problem. My latest rescue dog has dry skin and sores only down the middle of his back, I put shea butter lotion on him, but he still breaks out some. Tea tree oil has helpped too.

Good luck to you and I will be watching comments to see what i can try on him too.

Thanks again, this will make my day if I can cure him

I don't get a flaky scalp but I get a really dry scalp sometimes. Like it gets so dry that it feels tight and itchy. When that happens, I put olive oil in my hair, right after a shower (just towel drying my hair), and make sure I get it down to the scalp. I usually do this on my day off because I like to leave it in all day. I rinse it the next day and I have a happy scalp plus super soft hair!

Speaking of this, I should do that this weekend.

i used to have this too and never associated with my fibro until i got a series of very intensive acupuncture treatments for the fibro...and all of a sudden my dry itchy scalp has been gone. it's the craziest thing.

conditioners and moisturizing shampoos have only helped temporarily, like for a few hours. nothing long lasting.

I had the bleeding sores on the scalp and eyebrows - my dr gave me a cortisone cream to rub in. Worked in two days.

Neutrogena T-Gel helps, as well as Paul Mitchell Special Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner...also, natural things to try would be a beaten raw egg, and mayonaisse(really!)
